HORIZON EUROPE

Horizon Europe is the European Union's new research programme, which will succeed the former Horizon 2020, and will run between 2021 and 2027.

This new program focus on sustainable development goals, seeking to act towards a sustainable, fair and prosperous future for people and the planet.

The preliminary structure of the new program is divided into 3 main pillars:
- Excellent Science;
- Global Challenges & European Industrial Competitiveness;
- Innovative Europe.

Excellent Science:

The objective of this pillar is to reinforce and extend the excellence of the European Union's scientific base, divided into three components:

  • European Research Council -  Supporting frontier research projects, designed and directed by researchers through this council.

  • Marie SkłodowskaCurie Actions  - Supporting researchers, through scholarships and mobility, with the aim of fostering new knowledge and skills.

  • Research Infrastructures – Supporting integrated and inter-connected world-class research infrastructures.

Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness: 

This pillar focuses on supporting research projects at social challenges level, boosting technological and industrial development, seeking to tackle important global concerns, such as climate change and health precariousness. This pillar will also support partnerships with Member States, industry and other investors, working together on research and innovation.

  • Main areas:

    • Digital, Industry and Space;

    • Civil Security for society;

    • Health;

    • Climate, Energy and Mobility;

    • Culture, creativity and inclusive societies;

    • Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment.

Innovative Europe:

Its main objective is to develop the general panorama of innovation in Europe, through the stimulation of revolutionary advances and market creation that serve as a lever for the growth of SMEs.

  • European Innovation Council - Support to innovations with breakthrough and market creating potential.

  • European Innovation Ecosystems - Establish links with national and regional innovation agendas.

  • European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) - Bringing key actors (research, education and business) together
    around a common goal for nurturing innovation.
